Finding and leaving Saint Didier in the Vaucluse

“Should we stop?” Something about the village of Saint Didier had called our attention. Perhaps the steeple puncturing into the milky blue toile overhead. We pulled over and organized the dogs before heading out to explore. It is always a slow process – similar to tasting for spices while cooking – of garnering the temperature and will of a new environment. My camera was in hand and I started looking so intently that I didn’t realize that our conversation had shifted towards something important. “You aren’t listening to me,” Remi said. He was right. I stopped clicking and looked at him, at that face that I crossed the ocean to be near. And the elements of this one little town with some certain charm softened and no longer seemed so important to take home in my pocket. A dog barked repeatedly behind a gated wall. Kipling’s ears pricked forward and Ben plodded up to me with a slow wag as a sinewy woman filled up a plastic bucket at the fountain that we were perched on. She gave us a stare as hard as her boney arms. It was time to go. We gathered ourselves up and inwards, somewhat sheepishly and folded back into the car, tourist-like and wandered on, energy sorted both for Saint Didier and between ourselves.

We have moved and it went swimmingly. Thank you for all of your good wishes…

  1. So beautiful. Can you get homesick for a place you've never called home but would like to? This is where I'm meant to live, I feel quite sure. Bises from the far west,

  2. We moved in late June ourselves. We built a townhouse where we will live in the winter.Although …sigh…it is not in Provence. I have never seen a place with pink trim…and I am thinking I like it.
Don't know about you but we have yet to hang our art…Enjoy your new place…Janey

  3. Heather, it's so good to hear from you again. Hope your move is finished smooth. The pics of St.Dedier are wonderful. Like the fountain, the house with the pink doors and actually everything in that little village…so tranquil.

  4. I really loved the photo of the house with the pastel facade but the whole town seems pretty sweet
Can't wait to see where you actually moved.

  5. I'm so attracted by the sculpture of a woman on the wall in addition to all the other photos. There should be a story behind for another day.
Happy settling to your new place.

  6. That made me smile! Thank you so much, Judith for your continual kindness and for just being your fine self.

  7. Thank you G! I need to get caught up at your place too. I have a lot of reading to do!

  8. Merci, Michel. We still are in a sea of boxes but I will talk about it soon. 🙂

  9. Noooooo, we didn't move there! But I bet that you had a truly fabulous stay – it certainly sounds like it. And we certainly do love that area but it is too far away from Arles for Remi's work.
Gros Bisous to you, wonderful Elizabeth…

  10. And to you right back! I am sorry to have been so remiss about being in touch, lovely lady.

  11. Jackie, I am looking forward to getting settled (and having internet again) to finally get caught up on your adventures. I will say what you said to me: something is out there for you…waiting!

  12. Nope, we aren't living there but we have found a place of comfort, more on that soon. And I do believe that the fountain dates to 1683. No surprise to me at all that you would appreciate that unusual wall sculpture. It made me do a double take!

  13. Hmmm, why do I think there will be more re: that 'important conversation." What an amazing color palette. I am so glad that you are back home and moved into your new place. Things have been kind of lonely without your online presence.

  20. Congratulations on Moving! Beautiful photos. I look at each wondering…Do they live there? I hope you have a quite and private place to nest, a haven of comfort.
Is that 1603 or 1683 on the fountain? The sculpture on the wall is charming in a what is it doing there way.
