Leaning towards twilight

I can feel the days getting shorter. The compression of time within me, weighs. Having exchanged one time zone for another, I feel robbed all over again, a week of daylight missing as if I could count it on the fingers of my hand then wrap it into a sleeping fist.

So restless this awareness made me, that ticking tock of why I do not wear a watch, that I stood up looking for an exit. I grabbed my camera and leashed up my dog, sneaking out of my own anxiety.

I walked up the hill that I always do and looked for lines instead of objects to calm my pulse. At just past five, the light was in its laughing run, so I leant into it and let it push me pulled.

Lucky like a charm and looking like a child, it worked like a clock. My breath stung quiet with shivering hope, I returned home and opened the lock. “Good Boy.” I patted Ben reassuringly and climbed the stairs in the dark.

Holiday finds at Found

Hello everyone! I want to start off by extending a warm merci to all of you that responded and emailed regarding my previous post. Julie really has put together an amazing week in Provence and as all of the money raised by Passports with Purpose is going to Water.org, whether you win it or not, well, you are already a winner in my eyes just for having donated. And if you are waffling or just plain forgot to bid, please hurry as the fundraiser is finished on December 11th, just four more days away! So far, they have reached $35,000 of their $100,000 goal. Can you imagine what a phenomenal Holiday surprise it would be to offer your loved one any of the amazing prizes on offer?
Speaking of wonderful gifts, I have been looking forward to sharing a happiness-inducing store that I came across during my visit to the States. One of the many things that was so phenomenal about my trip was the timing. Not only did I get to have a perfect Thanksgiving (more about that soon) and delight in my Sister’s rocking birthday party (literally) but I got just the perfect dose of holiday buzz, minus the mania.

And no one did it better than Found in Ann Arbor’s Kerrytown District. Having grown up in a family who worked in retail (you can partially blame my Dad for Abercrombie & Fitch’s transformation from stolid safari to adolescent dreamland), I will admit to being ever so slightly a snob when it comes to a stores presentation. The lights are always too bright, everything can be taken in with a blink and there is little in the way of experience–no matter how earnestly the employees at Banana Republic try to make it otherwise.

Not so at Found, which is clearly curated with love by owner Mary Cambruzzi. I could have spent hours in there and would have if I were alone. As it was, I was a wild snapper with my camera, trying to capture as much of the ambiance as I could to share with you, so much so that one of the fellow shoppers asked exactly what was I doing with a suspiciously raised eyebrow! Does it sound odd that I would put a collective aesthetic on your tastes? But something tells me that if you are here, you love patina and the tiny details as much as I do. If so, then Found is very Lost in Arles!

The evening I was there was part of a special event and there was nary a space to stand. The line for the register stretched to the rear of the store and so with promises that I would return, I regretfully took my leave. Alas, my visits to the States are often a rambunctious run and I did not get the opportunity this time…

…and how would I have fit this 1930’s doll-house in my carry-on?

All of these candles are Made In Michigan…

…and the vintage finds are Made with Time!

Here in Arles, the Christmas lights have just popped on below my window, reminding me that it is the  moment to extend the holiday spirit to my life in France! I have pulled down the boxes of decorations from the attic and will now wonder what to do with them this year…Are you in the same mood or not quite yet…? Found certainly has sparked plenty of ideas…

While the gallery is a big believer in “Shopping Local” they ship internationally and there is currently free shipping for all orders in the US that are over $100. They don’t have much of these holiday items on their website but everyone was so nice that if there is something that you love here, I bet they will be able to help you out. And no, this isn’t a “Sponsored Post” (I wish I was at that point! ;), I just like what they do.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend…it’s time to break out the vin chaud!…brrr…

The Finest Gift

Crab-like I crawl out of my airplane seat and shake my legs in hopes that some feeling will return. Carefully, I pick my way past the sleeping passengers to the foot wide space between the two cabins. My friend and reader, Leslie, who had flown long-haul flights on Pan-Am, had reminded me to look out at the stars for they would shine so bright and yes, I could see that they were indeed glittering beacons of the holiday season calling to me…and yet…it is four and a half hours into the flight and we are suspended over the middle of the ocean. Half of my heart is reaching towards the tearful smiles that I shared with my family in parting and the other is longing for the joyful one that will be on Remi’s face as I descend the escalator in Marseille to welcome me home. Love lies in both directions and it is keeping me warm.
In this quiet space, thoughts sift like snow.
I sip water from a plastic cup, shivering as the ice cubes clink against my teeth. I try to stretch into a bit of yoga as inconspicuously as possible. There is so much time to think. Wonderful memories of my visit to the United States play on repeat, all filled with such kindness and generosity of spirit. Actually, I realize, that is what struck me the most on this particular trip. The willingness to give. From my Mom’s quick pecks to Ellen DeGeneres’ instant life-changers to Middle School cheerleaders dancing in front of the grocery store for the Salvation Army on a Saturday afternoon.
All the essence of wonderful.
That is why I was so thrilled when Julie Mautner from The Provence Post contacted me a few weeks back asking if I was interested in contributing to a project for charity that she was working on. I immediately said yes for if Julie was involved, I knew it had to be very worthwhile.
Previously, during a road trip to Montpellier for a blogger’s lunch, she had mentioned Passports with Purpose, a grass-roots charity initiative formed to both bring together the travel blogging community and help those in need. Amongst other goals, they had raised $30,000 to build a school in Cambodia and over $64,000 to build an entire village in India! This year, Passports with a Purpose is hoping to raise $100,000 for the fantastic organization Water.org (co-founded by actor Matt Damon) in order to build five wells for two communities in Haiti, where many areas have still not recovered from the devastating earthquake in 2010.
Each travel blogger that is participating in the fundraiser has offered a prize and Julie’s is truly exceptional, not to mention that it is the most valuable of the bunch with a total worth of $4700! I almost think that you have to be from Provence to understand how incredible it is for she has created a week here of unforgettable experiences. No one can say no to Julie and no one did. This is your chance to experience la crème de la crème of Provence, including a stay at one of the luxury villas in “Provence Paradise” outside of St. Remy, meals at the most exclusive restaurants of the region, wine tasting in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a market visit in Aix-en-Provence, massages and more. For my part, I  will be delighted to take the winner and their guests on my three-hour “Get Lost With Me” walking tour through the heart of Arles. Remi is donating a small print to be chosen by the winner from the Nature & Cultures collection, which includes many lovely photographs of Provence. To discover the details of how to “Win a Glorious Week in Provence” and to learn more about the involved groups, please see Julie’s post here. It goes without saying that Remi and I are both extremely proud to be participating in such fine company for such a worthy cause.
What is especially wonderful is that it only costs a $10 donation to enter for each prize. To do so click here and enter as many times as you like! Julie’s week is in the “Other” category but there is a lot on offer, including clothing, electronics, dinners and hotel stays all over the world. For those of you here in France, just think of what a phenomenal gift you could offer to friends and family if you win–I know that I will be trying my best! And for those who do not have $10 to spare (and I understand what that feels like), would you consider posting about this event on Facebook and Twitter? Because here is the catch, there is only ONE WEEK left to enter! December 11th will be here before you know it.
While I could have told you about this a little bit earlier (and would not have been in such a jet-lagged state to do so), I wanted to wait until today as this is my contribution to the By Invitation Only International Blog party. You see, I want as many people to hear about this wonderful project as possible. This month’s theme is “Christmas” and while the initial directive was to either describe one of your favorites from the past or present your version of a perfect fantasy, I chose to focus on the additional question of “What one tangible gift would you give?”
In my travels, I have seen the power of water in both its presence and absence. It is the stuff that we are made of and none of us can survive without it. So please, will you consider helping to give the Gift of Life? I believe in us. I believe in the power of generosity. We can make a difference. Let’s end the year by sharing the best of who we are.

Red dust on my shoes

…but not in my heart. Imprints burning with each step.

That’s it? Yes, that is it for today. No explanations or musings. I am taking a cue from my incredibly wise friend Suze and giving self-awareness a bit of a rest, most especially as I am still right in the midst of my visit to the States where there is much to absorb. Mainly a whole lot of love.
So I hope that you enjoyed the last of these photographs from the Colorado Provençal with its varying shades of ochre, a million years crushed into dust to swipe across the palm of your hand. Time is feeling a bit like that for me these days, both with the length of a shadowy pull while the past ripples out behind me and as strikingly immediate as a pinprick without pain.
I will be back in Provence on Monday. Remi has a way of teasing me about being squirrel-like at times and true enough, I am busy gathering nuts of memories for the winter ahead.

Palate cleanser

Oh my goodness. Most of us have had quite a bit to digest this week, haven’t we? Certainly in the States with our copious Thanksgiving feast (and yes, mine was absolutely the meal I have been dreaming of for five years, thank you, it really was) but also this rocket launch into the holiday season which effects so many of us, one that is nothing short of a doozy. Whew. So it might be fine timing to offer up a mini-post to help digest it all, a palate cleanser.
Nature does it best. I went to see “Life of Pi” (in 3-D no less) last night and I could tell from bits of stifled laughter that the very real animals featured in the opening credits were as unknown as the phenomenally created digitally-animated tiger featured in the rest of the movie. That made me pause a bit, most especially as there is so much exotic beauty all around us, even in small spaces.
I took these photos in the Colorado Provençal  and was somehow thinking of some of the design friends that read this blog while I did so (and the bark photos are precisely for the incredibly talented Francine Gardner of Intérieurs, I don’t know why). Lines, contrast, shape, color, form, texture and maybe even a hint of emotion (I know I am pushing it with that last one but if you were there you would have felt it too)–all that plants a seed to become something else, whether literal or figuratively.
We keep growing–ain’t that grand?
Wishing you some rest this weekend wherever you are.
